SCHOOL’S BACK, BUT SUMMER EVENTS ROCK ON

Kids are starting to head back to school, and some summer events are winding down, too. This Friday, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is showing the final free movie on the beach, with “The Goonies” at 9 p.m. The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music will also present its final performance of the season on Sunday. “Hope As Our Banner – the Grand Finale” starts at 7 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Cruz. Tickets are $26 to $96.
But there’s still plenty of summer fun as the season tilts toward fall. Event Santa Cruz’s Midtown Fridays summer block parties will continue through the month, and tomorrow it’s celebrating the 100th block party with music by Trestles and vendor specials. The Crow’s Nest beach parties will also rock out every Thursday through Sept. 3. Tonight, The Houserockers play on the beach behind the restaurant at 5:30 p.m.
The Santa Cruz Jug Band Festival returns to Abbott Square for a second year this week, with events starting today and running through Sunday. A jug band, if you are curious, is exactly what it sounds like — at least one musician is playing a jug or bottle. All of the rootin’ and tootin’ performances are free.
Tri Santa Cruz also returns to Santa Cruz’s Westside this Sunday morning. Be aware of road closures in the area as participants run, swim and bike along West Cliff Drive, Cowell Beach and Highway 1 north of town. – Lily Belli
