More than 100 elementary, middle and high school students from the Aptos area gathered earlier this month for what organizers hope will be an annual student music festival.

The daylong Pajaro Valley Unified School District Choir Festival at Aptos High’s Performing Arts Center on Nov. 16 featured group rehearsals, vocal workshops, performances by Cabrillo Youth Chorus and a concert directed by Cheryl Anderson, director of choral activities at Cabrillo College. Under the direction of expert vocal teachers and experienced choir directors, students performed music that ranged from classical to contemporary.

“This festival is about more than just singing; it’s about creating a community of young musicians who inspire and support each other,” Renee Roberts, a music teacher at Mar Vista Elementary School, said in a media release. Roberts helped conceptualize and organize the event.
