Quick Take
Police responded Tuesday evening to the second Santa Cruz shooting in less than a week, which they say was possibly gang-related and left one victim in critical condition. The incident along the San Lorenzo River levee near downtown comes after two people were shot outside the Crow’s Nest restaurant last Thursday night. No arrest has been made in either case.
A second shooting in less than a week is being investigated by the Santa Cruz Police Department.
As police continue to investigate a shooting that injured two outside the Crow’s Nest Thursday Night Beach BBQ event last week, another shooting was reported Tuesday evening.
One victim is in critical condition following a shooting that police say took place on the west side of the San Lorenzo River levee, near Front Street, just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“SCPD investigators were called in to begin immediate follow-up,” police said in a statement released Wednesday morning. “They learned that some type of altercation took place on the levee between the victim and the suspect before the shooting occurred. The unknown suspect shot the victim and fled on foot.”
Police said “a motive for the shooting is possibly gang related.”
Earlier Tuesday, the Santa Cruz Port District had announced that the summer’s three remaining Thursday Night Beach BBQ events would be canceled due to safety concerns stemming from last week’s shooting.
Police have yet to make an arrest in either case. Following last Thursday night’s shooting, which took place at 9 p.m., about half an hour after the well-attended, typically family-friendly event wrapped up, police said they believe it stemmed from an altercation in the parking lot. They were looking for a potential suspect who drove away from the scene in a black Dodge Charger.
