The San Lorenzo Park Riverlands will be closed to the public “until further notice” as the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation department seeks to “avoid disturbances to native plant species and sensitive habitats.”
The department will start work Monday on vegetation management in the area also known as the Benchlands “to prepare for the upcoming rainy season.”
The project is “essential for reducing flood risk, improving safety and ensuring the area remains accessible for park maintenance crews,” the city said in a release. It’s expected to take three or four days.
The city is working with contractor Ecological Concerns Inc. to manage overgrown vegetation, maintain water flow and prevent potential blockages, work which will include “a pre-site review by a qualified biologist to protect native plants and sensitive habitats.”
