Hundreds of demonstrators turned out across Santa Cruz County on Thursday for a series of May Day protests against Trump administration policies and labor actions in honor of International Workers’ Day.
At UC Santa Cruz, health care workers, researchers and support staff conducted a daylong strike at the main campus entrance, their third job action this year. Demonstrators also filled Watsonville Plaza for a separate “Day of Action” rally.
The day’s largest gathering took place on Ocean Street in Santa Cruz, where protesters waved signs before converging on the Resource Center for Nonviolence for a rally and musical performance. The event was sponsored by the Monterey Bay Central Labor Council and supported by progressive groups 50501 and Indivisible.
An evening performance of labor rights songs by musicians Aileen Vance, Coleen Douglas and Russell Brutsché raised funds for the Center for Farmworker Families, capping a day of widespread local activism.
