This June marks the 50th anniversary of Santa Cruz Pride, one of the oldest pride celebrations nationwide.
In honor of this milestone, the City of Santa Cruz will be kicking off pride early on Tuesday, May 27, with an IllumiNight Pride Event and Rainbow Procession.
The celebration will begin at 7 p.m. at the Santa Cruz County Governmental Center, 701 Ocean St. There, attendees can enjoy speeches from local leaders and community advocates before proceeding to the Santa Cruz Town Clock. Both landmarks will be illuminated with rainbow lighting to celebrate decades of LGBTQ+ courage and resilience in Santa Cruz County.
The anniversary will also be celebrated with the debut of a symbolic Pride Torch, which will feature in later pride events.
“This celebration is not just about history—it’s about community, visibility, and joy. It’s a reminder that Pride began as an act of resistance and has become a beacon of hope,” said Santa Cruz City Councilmember Sonja Brunner, who has led the city’s efforts to light the Town Clock. “I hope everyone shows up in full color to express support, love, and solidarity for our LGBTQ+ friends, and family.”
All are welcome at the event, which is free and open to all ages. For more information, visit santacruzpride.org.
