A three-car crash on Highway 17 just north of Scotts Valley on Saturday night left a 78-year-old Santa Cruz man dead and four others seriously injured.

According to the California Highway Patrol, which did not release the names of the deceased or any of the injured crash victims, the man drove his Honda Element into the path of northbound traffic at Sugarloaf Road around 9:55 p.m. The Element was hit by a Tesla Model Y, driven by a 19-year-old man from Antioch, which was then hit by a Honda Accord driven by a 24-year-old male from Daly City that had been behind the Tesla in the northbound left lane.

The Santa Cruz man was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP reported, “despite life-saving efforts by bystanders and medical personnel.” Four others were taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

The cause of the crash and whether drugs or alcohol were involved were still under investigation Sunday; the CHP urges anyone with potentially helpful information to call 831-796-2160.
