The City of Scotts Valley is reopening the Skypark Big Kid Playground with new climbing elements, tunnel slides and a specially designed swing that can accommodate children who use wheelchairs.

Scotts Valley replaced the playground equipment with a $750,000 Community Project Funding award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which it applied for with the support of Rep. Anna Eshoo.

The renewed play space is for children 6 to 12 years old. It was designed to be modern and inclusive, with an arch swing that accommodates wheelchair users and a net climbing structure that allows kids to explore new heights.

The city’s recreation department incorporated resident input with two online surveys and several in-person outreach events. Staff collected nearly 300 responses and comments from the public.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of the playground will be held Jan. 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Skypark, 361 Kings Village Rd.
