Crews from several local fire departments quickly extinguished a blaze in Soquel on Tuesday afternoon that consumed two buildings and had spread to the surrounding area.

Richard MacDonald, battalion chief with the Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County, said the agency received numerous calls reporting smoke in the area of Sage Lane from residents throughout the county, including some who could see flames.

Firefighters from Central Fire and Scotts Valley Fire Department, along with Cal Fire aircraft, arrived at what they believed at first was a brush fire, only to find two outbuildings fully engulfed in flames and the blaze spreading to the surrounding vegetation, MacDonald said. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to contain the fire.

The property owner told Lookout he was inside his house around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and looked out to see flames. He ran outside to find an outbuilding that he used as a music room on fire. He grabbed a garden hose and started spraying the trees and shrubs around the structure to stop the flames from spreading until firefighters arrived about 20 minutes later.
