A spelling bee for adults held at a bar? For some, this might trigger unpleasant flashbacks to sixth grade. However, for dedicated spelling nerds, the Unhinged Spelling Bee competition at Lúpulo Craft Beer House in downtown Santa Cruz could offer a uniquely good time.

Trivia hosts Shiri Gradek of Hugging Porcupines Productions and Jeff Matlock, aka The Professor, will be co-hosting the event on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

“This isn’t your sixth grade spelling bee,” says Gradek. “It’s goofy, it’s unfiltered and probably more fun than you’d usually have on a Wednesday night.”

Contestants are likely to be stumped by “words that are outrageous, inappropriate and downright unhinged,” according to the bar, which aims to transform into “a stage for hilarious, high-stakes spelling mayhem.”

Admission is free for both spectators and contestants. “Mature teens” will be admitted. Those interested in competing can sign up at Lupulo on the day of the event. Winners will get prizes.
