‘I’ve never seen it this time of year’: Anchovy die-offs this winter surprise Santa Cruz harbor community

Senior Deputy Harbormaster John Haynes told Lookout that anchovy die-offs typically happen in the summer months at the Santa Cruz Harbor. Until this year. Since January, the harbor has seen multiple unexpected anchovy die-offs draw birds, seals and sea lions into a feeding frenzy. He hopes it’s not a sign of a severe die-off season this summer.

Newsom emergency proclamation opens door for financial help to repair Santa Cruz Wharf, other damage from late December storms

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an emergency proclamation last week in response to the December storms that caused the partial collapse of the Santa Cruz Wharf and widespread damage throughout the county. The county will be able to access state financial assistance as well as state personnel, equipment and facilities required for recovery.
