The Pacific Ocean appears to have cranked the thermostat—and misplaced the remote.
El Niño is officially underway, and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center says it could become “very strong” this fall. That’s what often earns an event the unofficial—and slightly dramatic—nickname “Super El Niño.”
El Niño happens when parts of the tropical Pacific warm above normal. That extra heat can shift the jet stream and influence weather around the world. In July, NOAA measured temperatures from approximately 2.2°F to 4.9°F above average across key areas of the Pacific.
Closer to home, a marine heatwave has raised water temperatures off the West Coast roughly 3°F to 4°F above normal. If you’re a Santa Cruz surfer, you may have already noticed—especially while overheating in your trusty 4/3 wetsuit.
A strong El Niño doesn’t guarantee that every storm will be severe, but it can increase the likelihood of a wetter, more active California winter. For Central Coast residents, that could mean heavy rain, saturated soil, falling trees, flooding, landslides and extended power outages.
