The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said Monday it was working to identify suspects in the shooting early Friday morning that claimed the lives of two 21-year-old Watsonville residents, identified as Jeremiah Rios Aguilar and Giovanni Aburto Lopez.
A shooting in Watsonville that killed two men was described by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office on Monday as a “targeted attack.”
Deputies said they are working to identify suspects in the shooting, which occurred in a quiet farming area on the 700 block of Carlton Road outside Watsonville just before 1 a.m. Friday.
On Monday, the sheriff’s office identified the two victims of the fatal shooting as Watsonville residents Jeremiah Rios Aguilar and Giovanni Aburto Lopez. Both were 21 years old.
Deputies said that Aguilar and Lopez were suffering with gunshot wounds when law enforcement arrived on the scene early Friday morning in an area surrounded by farms and with few nearby homes. Both were pronounced dead at the scene following “life-saving efforts.”
Carlton Road was shut down most of the day Friday as deputies investigated.
Sheriff’s office spokesperson Ashley Keehn said Friday that deputies were conducting interviews to determine a possible motive and that a forensic pathologist would conduct autopsies.
