Local nonprofits, faith-based and local government organizations that provide food and shelter services can now apply for a share of $152,455 in new funding available through United Way of Santa Cruz County’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program.

EFSP was created to improve and expand local social services agencies’ ability to help residents grappling with economic emergencies. Funds administered through this program must be used for helping others with food, shelter, or rent and mortgages.

The program’s local board sets funding priorities based on a number of factors including resources available in the community, emergency food and shelter needs, and gaps in services. This year, the priorities are mass shelter expenses and food purchases.

Agencies planning to apply for funds must do so by Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 4 p.m. Applications are available on United Way’s website.
