A gathering Tuesday will celebrate a long-awaited renovation of the Capitola Community Center, which has stood for more than 40 years as a local gathering spot in the heart of Jade Street Park.

The renovation will address aging infrastructure, improving accessibility, energy efficiency, restroom facilities, and customer service areas. New architectural elements inspired by the Capitola Wharf and coastline will include textured concrete, fiber cement board and wooden accents.

The overhaul will complement the Treasure Cove Playground project at Jade Street Park. The universally accessible playground project will go to bid this fall for construction aiming to begin in spring 2026.

The Jade Street Community Center Renovation Project is made possible through community support. Assemblymember Dawn Addis championed a $1 million grant via Assembly Bill 102, a critical source of funding.

At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Capitola Mayor Joe Clarke and city staff will gather at the community center site at 4400 Jade Street to celebrate the start of construction. Public Works Director Jessica Kahn will lead a brief tour of the project’s key features.

As this small event will take place at an active construction site, attendees must wear personal protective equipment.
