In a recent Community Voices opinion piece, Mark Stephens complained about the number of Santa Cruz mayoral candidates. As a former yoga student of his, I respect Mark but am puzzled as to why he is concerned.

I’m voting for Ami Chen Mills, because I think she is a good listener who also has leadership skills and wants to protect Santa Cruz from exploitation and profiteering. But I respect and expect that a politically active town like Santa Cruz has numerous candidates with their supporters. Hopefully their enthusiasm will lead to a high voter turnout for this election. The more people who participate, the better it is for a democracy.
