Quick Take

Aptos High School canceled class Thursday as crews work to restore power to the campus after a prolonged outage that began on Saturday. A district spokesperson told Lookout that the school is aiming to reopen on Friday.

Aptos High School aims to reopen its doors Friday after canceling classes this week due to prolonged power outages at the campus, according to Pajaro Valley Unified School District officials.

PVUSD spokesperson Alejandro Chavez told Lookout that most of the campus power had been restored and was working properly as of Thursday early afternoon. District staff are ensuring that everything from fire alarms to school bells are running smoothly, he said.

The district has still not determined the exact cause of the outage, said Chavez. He added that staff are working with contractors and partners, such as Pacific Gas & Electric, to pinpoint what caused the power outage.

The outage at the high school began on Saturday, according to PG&E spokesperson Stephanie Magallon. She told Lookout the issue was not “PG&E-related.”

PG&E crews were able to help contractors hired by the district track down the problem to the school’s electrical equipment, said Magallon. The utility company “isolated” the campus from the broader power system to prevent any further issues, Magallon, adding the school remained connected to the electrical grid.

The outage left classrooms in the dark on Monday, interfering with test-taking and instruction. Some Aptos students went home early from school as a result. Classes at the high school continued on Tuesday, and students were provided cold lunch options in the event the power was not restored by lunch time, according to Chavez. The district canceled classes on Wednesday and Thursday.
