  3. We’ve all been keeping an eye out for the annual monarch butterfly nestings in the area. Natural Bridges rolls out the welcome mat for the monarchs with a family-oriented festival Sunday. 
  4. The story of the mighty coast redwood, so deeply rooted in Santa Cruz ecology, is told in thrilling detail in the new documentary “Giants Rising.”
  5. If the turn of the millennium was the good ol’ days for you, there’s a good chance Less Than Jake was part of your good-times soundtrack. You can relive that magic next week.
  6. UCSC historian Dana Frank has some lessons for today drawn from the Great Depression, and she’ll share them to launch her new book at Bookshop Santa Cruz.
  7. The Open Studios tour unleashes its second weekend with hundreds of artists opening their home/studios Saturday and Sunday, this time for all artists south of the yacht harbor.
  8. It’s October, so why not check out “Dawn of the Dead” at the Cocoanut Grove ballroom?
  9. Gotta say, I just love the charisma and authenticity of singer-songwriter Carsie Blanton, who mixes American roots music with American defiance.
