Firefighters rescued an unconscious child and two others from an apartment fire that broke out above the Brookdale post office early Friday morning.
The blaze was reported at 12:30 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived, neighbors had already helped four people escape the building, but three others remained trapped inside, the Boulder Creek Fire Protection District wrote in an Instagram post.
While crews were able to get a man and child out safely, two Boulder Creek firefighters and a Ben Lomond firefighter searched the burning building and found an unconscious child inside one of the apartments.
The man and two children were taken to a hospital, where they were recovering from burns and smoke inhalation, the fire district said. The family also had two dogs, one of which died in the fire.
The blaze drew response teams from multiple departments, including Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond, Zayante, Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz and Cal Fire. The post office sustained water damage but didn’t catch fire, the fire district said. Crews stayed at the scene for hours; the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
As a result of the damage, the Brookdale post office will be closed until further notice. Customers will be able to pick up their mail from the Boulder Creek post office at 200 Lorenzo Street.
