Cabrillo College’s horticulture department is partnering with K&D Landscaping to create a new public-facing demonstration garden at the school’s Horticulture Building on Monday, March 31.
The one-day beautification effort will create a drought-tolerant, eco-conscious landscape, designed by Shanti Wertz of Evolve Exteriors and Nicola Hughes of Cabrillo Horticulture with support from students in the horticulture department. The native plant landscape design celebrates California’s native plants and Indigenous culture while providing a new outdoor lab area for students. Plants will be labeled to encourage community learning and cultural appreciation.
The project comes as a celebration of over 50 years of legacy and learning at Cabrillo College, showcasing the power of hands-on education, community service and sustainable landscaping. K&D Landscaping, a family-owned and -operated company, has long prioritized enhancing public spaces.
“Partnering with K&D to renovate our hardscaping opens up new opportunities for the community to access quality horticulture education,” said Sarah Patiño Hulick of Cabrillo’s horticulture department. “As we celebrate 50 years of service, this project highlights native plants, ecosystem services, and the power of combining our design expertise with K&D’s skill in installation and materials.”
Located on an 11-acre site with greenhouses, an organic farm and botanical gardens, Cabrillo’s horticulture department serves over 150 students annually. For more information, visit the department’s homepage.
