Cabrillo Stage has solidified its reputation as a leader in regional theater with an extraordinary year, highlighted by the success of In the Heights. This dynamic production, celebrating community and resilience through Lin-Manuel Miranda’s electrifying score, has captivated audiences and secured a remarkable number of nominations in the BroadwayWorld Regional Awards.

The production has earned top recognition in several categories, showcasing the theater’s artistic and technical excellence. As of December 10, choreographer Chris “Boogy” Marcos leads the Best Choreography Of A Play Or Musical category with 17% of the vote. Director Estrella Esparza-Johnson holds 15% in the Best Direction Of A Musical category, reflecting her skill in bringing the vibrant Washington Heights setting to life. Mickey McGushin earned a nomination for Best Music Direction & Orchestra Performance, also with 14%.
In the Heights also received nominations for Best Ensemble and Best Musical, with 13% and 14% of the vote, respectively, highlighting the exceptional performances of the cast. Behind the scenes, the production’s technical achievements were celebrated as well: Richard Fong leads the Best Lighting Design Of A Play Or Musical category with 14%, while Scott Boynton tops Best Scenic Design with 17%.
Individual cast members garnered significant attention for their stellar performances. Sofia Rosas (Nina) leads Cabrillo Stage performers in the Best Performer In A Musical category, followed by Eddie Flores, Trevor Miller, Michael Navarro, and Lori Rivera. Melissa Martinez and Brissa Ibarra both earned votes in the Best Supporting Performer In A Musical category.
Additionally, Cabrillo Stage itself has been recognized as a community favorite, securing 11% of the vote in the Favorite Local Theatre category.

The 2025 Season
While Cabrillo Stage has not yet announced its lineup for the 2025 season, aspiring performers can prepare to audition for what promises to be another exceptional year. The theater will host in-person auditions on February 22 and 23, with callbacks scheduled for February 28, March 1, and March 2. For those unable to attend in person, video auditions will be accepted starting February 1.
