Two people, including a California Highway Patrol officer, were treated in hospital for minor injuries after a tree fell onto their vehicles on Highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains during a powerful storm that swept through the region on Thursday.
CHP officers responded to a crash south of Summit Road, where a tree had fallen on top of a black 2013 Audi Q5 that belonged to a woman from Los Gatos around 5:40 p.m. Thursday, according to a statement from the highway patrol. At the same time, another tree fell onto a CHP vehicle heading northbound, also south of Summit Road. Both cars were going at an undetermined speed.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital. The incidents are being investigated by the CHP.
CHP Cpt. Jason Grimm advises motorists to proceed with caution while driving in the rain, and to leave plenty of space between vehicles to ensure safety, according to the statement.
