Fifteen Santa Cruz County students have each been awarded $5,000 to help them advance in their education. Native Daughters of the Golden West hands out Mae B. Wilkin/Phryne Lorenz Scholarships annually to students to recognize their academic excellence and their commitment to a higher education.

Native Daughters of the Golden West, a historic organization founded in 1886 and dedicated to preserving California’s beauty and heritage, has awarded over $80,000 in 2025, including first-year and continuing education scholarships.

The Cabrillo College recipients include Alia Al-Saleh, Rosalinda Chavez, Daniel Fernandez, Alisha Handley, Alex Lomeli, Cassandra Rios-Rivas and Stephanie Valdivia.

The high school recipients include Farris Ayyad of Aptos High, Kassian Johnson of Harbor High, Mariza Duran and Angela Fernandez of Pajaro Valley High, Abigail Gabrielson and Lauren Schelegle of San Lorenzo Valley High, Rowan Helmond of Santa Cruz High and Janeth Marcos of Watsonville High.
