On Sunday around 10 a.m., firefighters from Cal Fire’s CZU unit and the Santa Cruz Fire Department responded to a cliff rescue near the UC Santa Cruz campus, in a wooded area off Empire Grade.
Per a social media post, the first responders determined that a rope pulley system was the only way to safely bring the victim, who fell an estimated 50 feet down a cliff, back up. The victim was put on a stretcher and taken by a waiting helicopter to a regional trauma center.
California State Parks, American Medical Response and the Santa Cruz Police Department also assisted with the rescue.
Reached Monday afternoon, Cal Fire CZU spokesperson Cecile Juliette said she did not have more details on the victim, their current condition or the circumstances of Sunday’s incident.
