A group traveling across North America to foster connection among breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomies is stopping in Santa Cruz County this week.
Flat Out Love is an initiative aimed at connecting what the group calls “flatties” — breast cancer survivors who are opting not to undergo breast reconstruction after having a mastectomy.
The group is traveling 15,000 miles across the United States and Canada to raise awareness. They say many “flatties” experience profound isolation after surgery and struggle with emotional and physical adjustments following their procedures.
The founders, who go by Sears and Sarge, plan to host informal, small meetups in Santa Cruz County on Thursday and Friday, where breast cancer survivors can share personal experiences, offer mutual support and build friendships.
They plan to set up their van at Pleasure Point Beach, near the restrooms, at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The event is open to the public and will include free pizza. Those interested in joining the Santa Cruz gatherings or future events can find more about the organization and its international tour here.
