Quick Take

Hector Marin argues that Santa Cruz needs his “community first” principle and that the city’s Latino residents need better representation. He advocates for “true” affordable housing at the very low-income level and says his experience as a renter is important for the council.

Editor’s note: Lookout editors wanted to give you a chance to hear from candidates directly. But we also did not want them to simply repeat their campaign slogans. So we asked them a single question: “How will you provide the sort of leadership our community needs and how are you prepared to meet the moment as it arises?”

We gave them 500 words to answer. We hope their answers will provide one more outlet of information as you decide who to vote for on March 5.

Hector Marin is running against Sonja Brunner, the incumbent. Brunner declined to submit a piece to Lookout or to attend our Feb. 8 candidate forum

Our beautiful town is changing, and as our town changes, we need a voice that mediates the conversation of our ongoing issues. I extend an invitation for you to join me in shaping a more inclusive and vibrant Santa Cruz, guided by the principle of “community first.”

I work as an educator/teacher’s aide for special-needs youth and as an essential worker at a local restaurant. My experience as an educator and essential worker underscores my commitment to ensuring that the needs of every segment of our community are prioritized in the decision-making process.

My passion for policymaking led me to also be an appointed member of the county’s Circle on Anti-Racism and Economic and Social Justice, where we spearheaded compensation for  commission work countywide, and successfully passed an equity framework that involved thousands of marginalized community members in the county. In these roles, my leadership not only encourages involvement but also takes initiative for our communities and most vulnerable.

The urgency to act stems from the underrepresentation of Latino people within the Santa Cruz City Council. That propelled me to run for office. Despite the good intentions of the district maps, there is still a lack of Latino voices in government and it is time to change that.

Our campaign resonates with residents worried about developments misaligned with the unique character of our neighborhoods. Advocating for true affordable housing at the very low-income level matters. I underscore the importance of neighborhood preservation and the fight against gentrification. I envision a Santa Cruz that grows thoughtfully, respecting the distinctive charm of our small-town atmosphere, while welcoming diverse communities. I want to create a citizens assembly, where all of our neighbors have a say in local matters, and make our policies understandable to bilingual community members.

Engaging with diverse voices, including Santa Cruz students, seniors and small business owners, provides invaluable insights into the multifaceted issues affecting District 2. Housing affordability is a central concern, with community members sharing stories of relocation due to rent increases, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions to the housing crisis. With our campaign and my personal experience as a rent-burdened resident, I promise to prioritize tenant rights and ensure that we keep our public spaces and our streets clean and safe.

As we transition to the mantra of “community first,” let this serve as a call to action for the residents of District 2, particularly those in the Eastside, Seabright and Lower Ocean neighborhoods. Together, let’s build a District 2 that puts community first, reflecting our shared values and aspirations and empowering the Eastside. I will advocate for true affordable housing, and for preserving the unique character of our neighborhoods.

You have my promise that we will work hard for you, and that we will also do our homework and involve you in our local political process. Collectively, we will make a positive change for our community. We would be honored to have your support.
