I recently listened to the Lookout candidate forum for District 5 Santa Cruz County supervisor and the contrast was striking.

Christopher Bradford connected with the community and spoke from a place of understanding. He takes a realistic approach to infrastructure, prioritizing immediate needs while acknowledging that outside funding can be helpful but is never guaranteed. His plan to adjust the budget within the county’s means demonstrates responsibility, and he understands our community’s significant concerns about disaster preparedness.

In contrast, Monica Martinez relied heavily on scripted responses. While she highlighted her experience in securing funding, she emphasized a plan to apply for future funding to solve the county’s budget issues. This approach is time-consuming and uncertain. Her infrastructure priorities, such as sidewalks and bike paths, overlook the real needs of the district, particularly along the Highway 9 corridor, which barely supports a two-lane road and requires critical repairs.

As voters weigh their options, it’s essential to consider not just experience but also the ability to connect with the community and effectively address pressing issues.
