I recently read an op-ed that Santa Cruz’s vice mayor wrote about the building going on in the city’s downtown.
I could not disagree more with her opinion that many of us are seeking nostalgia. Anyone who is living today has gotten way past that as the world is changing so fast.
But we can go forward continuing the quality of life that many of us came to Santa Cruz County for. We have lived here nearly 50 years. We came to the county for the small-town charm and not to live in an “Anywhere, America” place.
My husband recently drove around downtown and came back with this verdict: It’s looking horrible. I concur.
Yes, we need more housing, yes, we need to make things affordable, but how “affordable” are these units? With a rapidly growing senior demographic, and the cost of living, who will come? Build them and they will come is not the way to go. A thoughtful way of building using architecture that will bring pride and a quality of life is what I vote for.
Can the infrastructure support the building? Downtown, River Street and the library are not the answer with the current plans.
