On Oct. 7, Lookout published a story on the protest at UCSC. The headline reads, “On anniversary of war in Gaza, students rally at UC Santa Cruz.”

Oct. 7 was not the anniversary of war in Gaza. It was the anniversary of the Hamas attack in Israel that resulted in 1,200 deaths. The attacks on Gaza started days later. The slippage between these events suggests that Israel is responsible for the deaths of its own people.

The argument that Israel, as a “settler colonial” project, is responsible for inciting Palestinian revolt and, by extension, for causing the deaths of its own citizens, is a common anti-Zionist trope. As a news organization, Lookout Santa Cruz will retain readers’ trust by avoiding partisan tropes – from any direction.
