We lost one baby to abuse and neglect in Santa Cruz County – how many more will it take before we change our policies? 

Four children – including a Santa Cruz toddler who died of a possible fentanyl overdose – have suffered tragic, violent and unnecessary deaths in the Bay Area in the past two years, writes retired Santa Cruz family physician Jeoffry B. Gordon. He believes our child welfare system failed these kids and that we need to rethink policies, particularly reforms prioritizing family preservation. He is also appalled at the lack of accountability and transparency in Santa Cruz County’s Child Protective Services and calls on the board of supervisors to take action.

UCSC lost my trust when it forced me out of Camper Park – I wish my university cared more about me

Rising third-year UC Santa Cruz student Natalie Twilegar lost her home when school administrators closed Camper Park, which housed 41 students in on-campus trailers until July 10. She is angry, disappointed and disillusioned by the process and has lost her trust in the UCSC administration. Several of her friends, she says, are considering transferring or dropping out. Others now have to live in their cars.

One-way West Cliff plan won’t hold off Mother Nature, but would harm neighborhoods, limit equitable access

Santa Cruz’s iconic West Cliff Drive should remain a two-way street, writes Bob Goldbeck, who lives in the surrounding neighborhood.  He believes diverting traffic into neighborhoods – including his – will create safety and quality of life issues for residents and limit access for everyone else. He thinks the city’s 50-year vision plan, currently on hold, is shortsighted and as costly as maintaining the road.
