The Santa Cruz Warriors have become one of the greatest community assets our city has seen in decades. Beyond basketball, the organization and the NBA have invested deeply in Santa Cruz through youth programs, school partnerships, charitable giving, community events and support for local nonprofits and small businesses.

They have brought energy to downtown, created family-friendly entertainment and given our community something positive to rally around.

In 2015, both the Golden State Warriors and the Santa Cruz Warriors won championships in the same season — a historic moment that highlighted the strength of the entire Warriors organization. That success helped change the perception of minor league basketball nationwide and inspired tremendous growth in local youth basketball and AAU programs throughout Santa Cruz County.

What many people might not realize is that bringing the Warriors to Santa Cruz was never a sure thing. It required strong leadership, difficult negotiations and the ability to unite business leaders, neighborhoods and local government around a shared vision.

Ryan Coonerty played a key role in making that happen as mayor.

Now, as discussions continue about the future of the South of Laurel Street area and the Warriors’ long-term future in Santa Cruz, experienced leadership matters more than ever. Keeping the team here will require someone who understands how to navigate major civic projects and work collaboratively with residents, local stakeholders and the Warriors organization.

Of all the candidates running for mayor, Ryan Coonerty has the proven experience, relationships and leadership necessary to help ensure the Santa Cruz Warriors remain part of our community for generations to come.
