The Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship is coordinating local trail maintenance events this weekend, including a host of trail work challenges and a free afterparty.

The events on Saturday are part of National Trails Day, a campaign for community volunteering and trail work run by the American Hiking Society.

To celebrate local hiking routes on the day, the stewardship has a list of 20 local volunteer trail work sites on its website. Those listings include difficulty and accessibility rankings for each work site.

They range from beginner-friendly sites such as monarch butterfly habitat restoration at Lighthouse Field State Beach to more challenging projects such as maintaining trails in Soquel Demonstration State Forest.

This year, National Trails Day is divided into two segments. On Saturday morning, the stewardship will provide volunteers with coffee and light snacks across trail sites from 9 a.m. to noon. After, volunteers are invited to a free afterparty at Woodhouse Blending & Brewing in Santa Cruz from 2 to 5 p.m.

At the afterparty, volunteers will receive free drinks and Brazilian food. The event will also feature dozens of local artists and vendors, a large raffle and live music by Squid Row.

Those interested in volunteering can register on the SCMTS 2025 National Trails Day page by clicking the work site of their interest.
