Property development

  • The Santa Cruz County Planning Department has formally approved a zoning application for a 3-bedroom vacation rental at 850 Via Gaviota in Aptos, as of July 31. This property is situated approximately 260 feet west of the intersection with Club House Drive. The approval follows the submission of a Vacation Rental Permit application, which was open for public comment until July 22. The decision was made on or after July 23, in accordance with Santa Cruz County Code section 13.10.694. Residents are reminded that any issues with the vacation rental should be reported to the emergency contact, Cheshire Rio Realty, whose information is available at the property and on the Planning Department’s website. Appeals against this decision must be filed in writing, along with the required fee, within two weeks of the decision date. (view application)
     

Roadwork is affecting traffic in the region

  • A traffic hazard was reported today at 6:35 a.m. on Highway 1 South near Park in Capitola/Soquel. A vehicle was partially blocking the #2 lane, causing a slow lane obstruction. The Freeway Service Patrol arrived at 6:51 a.m. to move the vehicle to the next offramp, with no CHP standby needed.
     
  • A vehicle hit a power pole on Highway 9 at Irwin Way in Boulder Creek, San Lorenzo Valley, causing both directions of the highway to close. A SIG Alert was issued, and the road stayed closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene and fixed the damage. This led to major traffic delays, with vehicles being rerouted through alternate routes like the single-lane Alta Vista. The incident was reported on August 6.
     
  • The southbound lanes of Highway 1 in Capitola/Soquel are facing closures for roadway excavation work. The closure will last until August 29 at 6:30 a.m.
