Property development

  • The Santa Cruz County Planning Department is currently reviewing a zoning application for 4606 Bain Avenue, where the property owner is seeking to renew a permit that allows the operation of a two-bedroom vacation rental in an existing single-family home. This application requests approval to continue using the property as a vacation rental. Residents who wish to provide input or express concerns about this proposal must submit their public comments to the Planning Department by March 4, as comments will not be accepted after that date. Roadwork is affecting traffic in the region

  • South Highway 9 at Lorenzo Avenue in San Lorenzo Valley has one-way traffic because of emergency work. This closure will last until April 1.
     
  • One lane is closed on North Highway 9 at Encinal Street in the Westside/Downtown area because of shoulder work. The closure will last until 3:01 p.m. on February 28.

County officials regularly inspect food facilities to ensure compliance with state laws. Here, Lookout Santa Cruz reports both those who have passed the inspections and those that the county deems to have a “major” issue. The county’s full ongoing report can be accessed here.

  • Aldo’s Bakery & Cafe at 4628 Soquel Dr, Soquel, passed a county health inspection on February 23 with no critical issues.
     
  • Pretty Good Advice at 3070 Porter St., Soquel, passed a county health inspection on February 23 with no critical issues.
     
  • Busy B’s Restaurant Solutions Inc at 209 Esplanade Ste B, Capitola, passed a county health inspection on February 24 with no critical issues.
     

Community crime report

  • A person was arrested for abusing and physically harming an elderly or dependent adult. The incident happened near the 260 block of South Rodeo Gulch in Santa Cruz County at 7 p.m. on February 14. (source)
     
  • A person was arrested for several crimes, including identity theft, grand theft, having stolen property, carrying burglar tools, giving false identification, resisting and fighting with police, and trying to defraud using someone else’s ID. The incident happened near the 180 block of 41st Avenue in Capitola at 2 p.m. on February 4. (source)
     
  • A person was charged with disorderly conduct involving alcohol, obstructing a public officer, arson, and recklessly causing a fire to property or land. The incident happened near Cliff Dr and Opal Cliff in Capitola at 4 p.m. on December 31. (source)
     
  • A person was arrested for being drunk in public and for child endangerment. The incident happened near northbound State Route 1 just south of Bay Avenue in Santa Cruz County. It occurred at midnight on February 8. (source)
      
  • A court order related to domestic violence was violated near the 150 block of Wharf Road in Capitola at 6 p.m. on February 13. (source)
     
  • A person was arrested for shoplifting (with two or more previous offenses), having illegal drug paraphernalia, acting disorderly due to drugs and alcohol, and violating probation. The incident happened near the 170 block of 41st Avenue in Capitola at 6 p.m. on February 11. (source)
      
  • Police responded to a case involving probation violation, possession of drug paraphernalia, controlled substances, and narcotics, as well as a PRCS flash incarceration. The incident happened near the 210 block of 41st Avenue in Capitola at 5 p.m. on February 12. All charges were later dropped. (source)
     
  • A person was involved in shoplifting, damaging property while trespassing, and obstructing a police officer. The incident happened near the 380 block of Clares Street in Capitola at 11 p.m. on February 9. (source)
     
  • A person was found with a controlled substance and had more than two previous offenses. They were on probation and were released after the incident. This happened near the 220 block of Derby Ave. in Santa Cruz County at 2 p.m. on February 8. (source)
     
  • A person was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, including having a blood alcohol level over .08 percent and violating probation related to DUI. The incident happened near Soquel Dr. just north of State Park in Santa Cruz County at 10 p.m. on February 6. (source)
     
  • A person was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or higher. The incident happened near 41st Avenue and Nova Drive in Capitola at noon on February 9. (source)
     
  • A person was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol level over .08 percent. The incident happened near Capitola Rd and 38th Ave. in Capitola at 6 p.m. on February 3. (source)
