Santa Cruz police used a police dog Saturday to arrest a man who threw items from a window onto a downtown street and barricaded himself in an apartment for hours.
According to a Santa Cruz Police Department social media post, police first got a call at 8 a.m. about a man tossing items from a broken fifth-floor window onto Pacific Avenue and the sidewalk below.
The man refused to speak with police and partnering mental health professionals, barricaded himself inside the apartment, and threatened to shoot through the door, according to the post. Despite multiple attempts throughout the day and into the event, crisis negotiators were unable to talk the man into a peaceful surrender, SCPD officials said in a statement.
After a 12-hour standoff, police obtained a felony warrant to arrest the man, and officers forced their way into the apartment. They used a police dog to arrest the man.
Medical personnel provided the man with immediate medical attention and transported him to the hospital for evaluation. When medical professionals cleared him, police booked him into jail.
Pacific Avenue was cleared of debris and reopened to the public shortly after the arrest.
