Watsonville is looking for its second Watsonville Youth Poet Laureate.

The Watsonville Youth Poet Laureate program’s goal is to recognize poets, rappers, writers and spoken-word artists under the age of 20 for their literary accomplishment, seeking nominees who are dedicated to promoting awareness of poetry, and whose overall work shows a commitment to social justice, equality and diversity.

The Watsonville Youth Poet Laureate will serve a one-year term beginning in January, representing the city of Watsonville, participating in poetry and literary activities of the Watsonville public library, reading poems at ceremonial events, city council or other public meetings, attending literary and other cultural events, giving and participating in five to 10 public readings and events, and joining in the search for the city’s next Youth Poet Laureate.

The next Youth Poet Laureate will replace Rachel Huerta and Eva Sophia Martinez Rodriguez, whose terms expire in December.

Poets can nominate themselves or be nominated by other city residents. Applications are available at public libraries and may be submitted in person at the library or through email to alicia.martinez@watsonville.gov before Nov. 15.
