Quick Take

In Santa Cruz, a protest against the Trump administration and Earth Day celebrations drew hundreds to parallel downtown events on Saturday.

On Saturday, two festive scenes unfolded downtown spurred by democracy and environmentalism. On Ocean Street, demonstrators lined the sidewalk from Blaine Street to Soquel Avenue for the largest protest in the city since the April 5 “Hands Off” rallies. Organized by Indivisible Santa Cruz County, the protest was part of the national “50501” movement, which stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement.

Just blocks away, annual Earth Day festivities brought a more celebratory mood to Pacific Avenue, where the sounds of SambaDá and the sight of stilt-walkers entertained families.

Photographer Natasha Leverett was on hand to capture the community action.
