The Santa Cruz Police Department is on the hunt for two people photographed stealing an interpretive plaque that washed up from the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf collapse.

SCPD posted a photo of the two suspects pushing the plaque down East Cliff Drive near Seabright State Beach to its Facebook account. The photo had been reported to an email tip line the city set up to report debris.

The Santa Cruz Police Department didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment on Tuesday.

The plaque was made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and contains interpretive information about sea lions, said city spokesperson Katie Lee.

There are are currently no updates on the suspects or the whereabouts of the missing plaque according to Lee.

The police are asking if anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information that could help identify the suspects or locate the plaque, to call them at 831-420-5820 or the SCPD anonymous tip line at 831-420-5995.

If you find any wharf commemorations, memorial benches, or other memorabilia that was on the wharf, please get in touch with Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation at recreationevents@santacruzca.gov or 831-420-5270.

The City of Santa Cruz continues to ask community members to report debris through email, including photos of debris and the location to reportdebris@santacruzca.gov.
