The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of burglaries in Aptos over the past week, and is advising residents to take precautionary measures.
Within the past week, the office has reported more than a dozen burglaries at residential and commercial properties in Aptos, according to Sgt. Zach West, with addresses on Tolak Road, Calle Serra, Ridge View Road, Townsend Drive, Bayview Drive and Freedom Boulevard among those targeted.
Many of the burglaries have occurred during evening hours, and investigators believe they are connected based on the locations and time of day. As of Wednesday afternoon, deputies couldn’t say whether it’s one person or multiple people behind the break-ins. Some of the properties targeted by the break-ins have been unlocked, and outdoor sheds have been broken into, said West.
West told Lookout that deputies are conducting extra patrols around the affected areas, and speaking with residents to get more information that might be helpful for the investigation. “We have multiple detectives that are currently working on the case, analyzing the video surveillance, trying to kind of piece those things together,” he said.
The sheriff’s department is advising Aptos residents to take extra safety precautions to help prevent further criminal activity, like making sure their doors are locked and, if they have security cameras, to ensure that they are working.
Anyone with information about the burglaries can contact Detective Alex Spencer at 831-454-7636 or submit an anonymous tip at 831-454-7631.
