A pedestrian was struck and killed while walking on the southbound side of Highway 1 in Santa Cruz early Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at around 5 a.m., according to a CHP news release. Officers responded to a crash just north of Soquel Avenue. A 44-year-old woman from Santa Cruz was driving a gray 2013 Toyota Camry when she struck a 73-year-old man, also from Santa Cruz, who was walking on the highway. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Southbound Highway 1 lanes were closed for several hours following the crash but have since reopened. CHP was still investigating the cause of the accident Friday afternoon, and investigators said they don’t yet know whether drugs or alcohol were factors, or whether any charges will be brought. Investigators didn’t name the victim or the driver.
