Santa Cruz police were called to beach around 1:16 a.m. Friday, where they found 20-year-old Samuel Brannigan Stone near the waterline next to Mansoor. Police arrested Stone and charged him with homicide. Investigators later learned that Stone and Mansoor had been dating.

UC Santa Cruz spokesperson Scott Hernandez-Jason said Stone had been a student from summer 2021 through Jan. 10, and that Mansoor was currently a student.

Stone remained in the Santa Cruz County Jail on Wednesday without bail after a Santa Cruz Police Department detective filed a request for a bail increase to $500,000 last week, alleging that Stone is a threat to public safety and is a flight risk. The filing also says that Stone is “unhoused and suffers from mental health issues.”

Stone was originally set for arraignment Wednesday morning, but the arraignment was continued to March 13.
