Two people — one injured in the stabbing and the suspect — were hospitalized following the incident and a subsequent high-speed chase. Capitola police say that there is no indication of an ongoing threat.
A man stabbed a person in Capitola on Sunday evening and then led police on a high-speed chase throughout the county before the suspect crashed on Highway 17.
According to a Capitola Police Department social media post, officers responded to a report of a stabbing on the 1700 block of 41st Avenue around 5:53 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, officers found a man in his late 30s suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was transported to a trauma center, and his condition was unknown as of publication time.
Officers, assisted by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, found the suspect in the area — a man in his late 20s — still holding the knife. The suspect fled in a vehicle following a short standoff, and Capitola police officers chased after him.
The pursuit continued onto northbound Highway 17, where the California Highway Patrol took the lead. The pursuing officers ended their chase near Idylwild Road, as the suspect’s driving grew increasingly dangerous. He ended up in a collision south of Bear Creek Road in Santa Clara County, where he was taken into custody and transported to a trauma center. His condition is currently unknown.
The sheriff’s office and the California Highway Patrol did not respond to Lookout’s request for inquiry, and Capitola Police Chief Sarah Ryan declined to release the identity of the suspect. She added that there was no update on the victim.
