A long-submerged construction crane finally emerged from waters near the end of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf Saturday, nearly six months after a violent winter storm that ripped away 150 feet of the historic pier.

Brunt of storm has passed, says NWS; evacuation orders lifted
A National Weather Service meteorologist said the main rain band of the latest atmospheric river had passed through Santa Cruz County as of midday Thursday, with only mild to moderate rain expected through Friday. A few weather warnings will remain in effect until Saturday, but the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office has lifted all of its evacuation orders.

Flood warnings turn to evacuation orders in Felton, Watsonville; Santa Cruz closes wharf Friday with high surf forecast
Residents of the Felton Grove neighborhood along the San Lorenzo River and of areas of Watsonville along Corralitos and Salsipuedes creeks were ordered to evacuate Thursday morning after heavy rains. In Santa Cruz, the city will close the municipal wharf Friday with big swells forecast.

New wharf restaurant Miramar seeks approval, lease commitment from city council
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Santa Cruz City Council, restaurateur Mark Gilbert will seek approval on plans for Miramar, a two-story restaurant on Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Although plans for the restaurant were approved in 2013 and again in 2022, Gilbert has altered the design to account for current construction rates and is hoping that the city will commit to a lease to move the project forward.

‘Scarier than COVID’: Wharf collapse cost nearby restaurants hundreds of thousands of dollars
The Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf reopened on Jan. 4, 12 days after its partial collapse, but wharf restaurants said that for them, the damage is ongoing. The owners of Stagnaro Brothers, Firefish Grill and Woodies Café lost hundreds of thousands of dollars, in addition to damages from food waste, lost hours and employees. Some restaurants are still listed on Google as “temporarily closed,” leaving owners frustrated.
