A 17-year-old cyclist was seriously injured when his electric bicycle collided with a truck at a busy intersection in Capitola, police said.

The collision occurred around 8:40 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, at 41st Avenue and Clares Street. The semi truck was making a delivery to a local business when the driver struck the teen cyclist. A photo posted to social media by police showed a Penske truck.

Capitola Police Department officers reached the scene within minutes and administered emergency first aid, including applying a tourniquet to the injured teenager.

Firefighters with the Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County freed the youth from under the truck and transported him to a regional trauma center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. Firefighters later recovered the teenager’s SUPER73 e-bike from under the truck.

Police did not release the identity of the truck driver, who they said remained at the scene and helped the injured teen. Investigators said the driver cooperated with law enforcement and was not impaired.

Capitola police declined to share more details out of privacy concerns for the teen cyclist and his family.

Authorities are asking witnesses or those with dashboard camera footage to contact the department at 831-475-4242.
