Runner-up: Bookie’s Pizza

1315 Water St., Santa Cruz 95062

Lookout Staff Pick: Favorite Place for a Casual First Date – Samba Rock

No guarantee you’ll leave this date with your future spouse, but the odds are not zero. I met my now-husband for a morning coffee first date at Samba Rock on Water Street – delicious, nutritious, and with an easy exit plan if things go awry (no one orders two açaí bowls, right?). We both enjoyed The Original, Da Silva, and I made sure he knew that the trick to the perfect bowl is to mix it into the creamiest milkshake-adjacent texture you have the patience to attain. My theory of an easy exit did work in theory. No one orders two açaí bowls, but two cups of coffee can keep you chatting for longer if you don’t wish for the moment to end quite so soon. Runner-up: 11th Hour Coffee

1001 Center St. #1, Santa Cruz 95060

402 Ingalls St., Suite 19, Santa Cruz

Lookout Staff Pick: Favorite Matcha – Verve Coffee

Matcha is having a moment. The powdered green tea is featured in lemonades, cakes and cocktails, or dressed up with elaborate berry purees, syrups and cold foams. But there are few things more soothing on a cool morning than a hot matcha latte adorned with nothing beyond frothed milk to temper the bitterness of the tea. When it comes to going back to basics, no coffee shop serves a better matcha latte than Verve’s downtown Santa Cruz location. The matcha is bright green and never grainy or overwhelmed by sweeteners and other fillers. It has just the right amount of creamy milk foam. Sure, you can indulge in plenty of over-the-top matcha creations at Verve, as Lookout Food & Drink Correspondent Lily Belli wrote this summer. But sometimes, less really does taste like more. – Tamsin McMahon

Runner-up: Woodstock’s Pizza

710 Front St., Santa Cruz 95060

Lookout Staff Pick: Favorite Place to Watch Sports – Woodstock’s Pizza

It’s always been a bit of a mystery why there’s never been a great sports bar in downtown Santa Cruz. A few of them have come and gone over the years without making much of an impression. But into that void now comes Woodstock’s Pizza on Front Street. Woodstock’s — which, for the record, is a California chain, based in San Diego — has undergone a remarkable transformation in the last year, adding a full bar, and now has more TVs than a Best Buy showroom, all of which are tuned to “the game,” often several games. The pizza’s good, the drinks are flowing, the seats are plentiful, and it’s a great place to bond with strangers over a beer, a high-five and complaints about “our” bullpen. Now, if the Niners or the Warriors can get a head of steam going into the postseason this year, Woodstock’s will be positively glowing with fun, uncomplicated, sports-ball joy.
