A UC Santa Cruz student has been identified as the victim killed early Thursday when a vehicle carrying two people crashed into the ocean off of West Cliff Drive at Steamer Lane.
UCSC officials confirmed that university police were called to the scene to support the incident. University spokesperson Scott Hernandez-Jason said the Santa Cruz Police Department is investigating.
“We were heartbroken to learn that the victim was a UC Santa Cruz student,” he said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go out to the student’s family and friends during this difficult time. We are providing support resources to those affected by this tragedy.”
UCSC hasn’t released the name of the victim, and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office did not return Lookout’s request for comment by publication time.
At around 12:50 a.m. Thursday, Santa Cruz Regional 911 received a call and units from several agencies responded, including all five units from the Santa Cruz Fire Department, SCPD and a battalion chief from the Scotts Valley Fire Department.
The rescue crews found one victim who escaped from the car and said another victim was still inside. Four rescue swimmers extracted the second victim, the UCSC student, who was transported to a medical facility and passed away. The first victim who had escaped sustained minor injuries.
