Another mountain lion sighting this week near a residential area of Watsonville has police reminding residents to exercise caution.

According to the Watsonville Police Department, the cougar was spotted near 34 Harkins Slough Rd. It was last seen entering the nearby slough area on Monday morning.

While this is the second mountain lion sighting in a month for Watsonville, similar incidents have also recently occurred in Aptos and Capitola.

Watsonville’s city government and police department issued a joint social media post with precautions for the public, encouraging members of the community to remain alert and be watchful near open spaces.

Authorities warn those near the affected area to keep pets and young children inside – particularly at night – or under close supervision. If you see a mountain lion, do not approach and immediately call 911 if it becomes aggressive.

If you do encounter a mountain lion, it’s best not to run or stare into its eyes. Instead, spread your arms wide to appear bigger, make loud noises and back away slowly.
