Santa Cruz County is hosting an event at the harbor for boaters and others to drop off expired or unwanted marine flares.

The free collection event at the Santa Cruz Harbor Maintenance Yard at 425 Brommer St. in Santa Cruz will run from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Nov. 9. Boaters can get help disposing of marine flares, which contain toxic materials that can harm the environment if thrown in the trash or disposed of in local waterways.

The collection is open to boaters who live in or berth their vessels in Santa Cruz County, as well as local fire departments, fire districts and public works agencies. Proof of residence or a slip fee is required for recreational boaters.

Participants should pack flares in a sturdy container and remain in their vehicles while staff unload the materials. Commercial flares or other hazardous waste will not be accepted.

Funded by CalRecycle, the event also promotes the use of reusable, battery-operated emergency flares as a safer, sustainable alternative.
