A magnitude 4.6 earthquake centered just east of Boulder Creek jolted Santa Cruz County residents awake at 1:41 a.m. Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Locals across the county reported feeling the seismic activity – originally reported as magnitude 4.9 before that figure was revised – with residents in just about every jurisdiction in Santa Cruz County and around the San Francisco Bay Area reporting that they felt it on social media. Within about 45 minutes of the earthquake, nearly 17,000 people reported feeling it to the USGS tracking site.
According to USGS’s Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER), a system that analyzes seismic data from sensors to estimate earthquakes’ impact, there is a low likelihood of casualties and damage associated with the earthquake.
Cal Fire’s Santa Cruz-San Mateo unit wrote in a post on X that it had enacted its earthquake procedure and inspected all buildings. The agency had not observed any damage as of 2:12 a.m.
