The Santa Cruz County Civil Grand Jury is calling on residents to submit complaints and concerns about the operation of various aspects of county and city government, fire and water districts “or the officers and personnel within them.”

Highway 1 ramp at 41st Avenue closures planned next week
The northbound Highway 1 onramp at 41st Avenue in Soquel will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Oct. 28-31, to accommodate continued work on north- and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges.
De Serpa, Martinez widen money advantage in supervisor races
Kim De Serpa and Monica Martinez widened their fundraising advantage over Kristen Brown and Christopher Bradford, respectively, in their campaigns for the District 2 and District 5 seats on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, according to campaign finance reports that were due Thursday. In the District 2 race, De Serpa has cash on hand, while Brown reported spending slightly more money than she has brought in. In the District 5 race, Martinez has a nearly 3-to-1 fundraising advantage over Bradford.
Soda industry has spent more than $1.2 million to defeat Santa Cruz sugary drink tax
A campaign funded by some of the country’s biggest soft drink companies to defeat Measure Z, a proposed sugary drink tax in the City of Santa Cruz, has spent more than $1.2 million so far, according to campaign finance reports filed this week. With less than two weeks before the Nov. 5 election, supporters of the measure had reported spending only $43,000.
Sarah Ryan will be Capitola’s new police chief, first woman in job
The City of Capitola announced Friday that Capt. Sarah Ryan has been appointed as the city’s new chief of police, the first woman to hold the position. She’ll take over for Andrew Dally, who is retiring, on Nov. 24.

Misty Navarro joins Pajaro Valley Unified School District board
Dr. Misty Navarro was sworn in Wednesday to fill the vacant Area 7 seat on the Pajaro Valley Unified School District board of trustees after being appointed by the board in a special meeting on Monday. Navarro is an emergency medicine physician who has worked for Salinas Valley Health for the past 16 years. She succeeds former board president Jennifer Holm, who resigned in September after six years representing Area 7.
Cabrillo College named best community college in California
Cabrillo College has been ranked the best community college in California in a study released by marketing company SmartAsset. The same study ranked Cabrillo 37th overall in the United States.
Watsonville Community Hospital Foundation wins Impact Award
The Watsonville Community Hospital Foundation has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 Silicon Valley Business Journal Community Impact Award, which “recognizes organizations that have made significant contributions to the betterment of their communities through innovative programs, impactful outreach and exceptional dedication to service.”
Fire off Highway 1 near Buena Vista Drive closes northbound lanes
At around 1 p.m. Monday, Cal Fire and several other agencies responded to “several small fires” north of Buena Vista Drive and closed all northbound lanes on Highway 1 – just north of Watsonville.
